Competitive Strategy for Open Source Software
نویسندگان
چکیده
C open source software (COSS) products—privately developed software based on publicly available source code—represent a rapidly growing, multibillion-dollar market. A unique aspect of competition in the COSS market is that many open source licenses require firms to make certain enhancements public, creating an incentive for firms to free ride on the contributions of others. This practice raises a number of puzzling issues. First, why should a firm further develop a product if competitors can freely appropriate these contributions? Second, how does a market based on free riding produce high-quality products? Third, from a public policy perspective, does the mandatory sharing of enhancements raise or lower consumer surplus and industry profits? We develop a two-sided model of competition between COSS firms to address these issues. Our model consists of (1) two firms competing in a vertically differentiated market, in which product quality is a mix of public and private components, and (2) a market for developers that firms hire after observing signals of their contributions to open source. We demonstrate that free-riding behavior is supported in equilibrium, that a mandatory sharing setting can result in high-quality products, and that free riding can actually increase profits and consumer surplus.

Open Source, Dual Licensing and Software Competition
To distribute software, commercial firms have the opportunity to use some dual licensing strategy i.e. to provide their software under two different licensing terms (proprietary and open source). In this paper, we investigate the relevance and impacts of such distribution strategy in the presence of an already existing open source software. In this competitive setting, we determine in which con...

In 1991 nobody really expected to discuss the question, if the real threat for the future of Microsoft will be an OS created by a student, distributed freely and developed by thousands of unknown helping hands. Thirteen years later, the question is no longer if Linux is a threat to Microsoft. Now, the question aims in a different direction. Today many great ICT-Players discuss how to use the “f...
متن کاملCompetitive implications of software open-sourcing
This paper is concerned with the economic trade-offs associated with open-sourcing, the business strategy of releasing free open-source versions of commercial software products. The effect of the release of open-source versions on the customers’ perception of products is an important determinant of open-sourcing outcomes. We model open-sourcing as a strategic option for firms that compete in th...
متن کاملThree Strategies for Open Source Deployment: Substitution, Innovation, and Knowledge Reuse
As open source software adoption becomes mainstream, the question shifts from whether organizations should use open source, to how organizations can best deploy and use open source. Based on three distinct types of organizational outcomes for open source use, we propose three different strategies for deploying open source: a substitution strategy, an innovation strategy, and a knowledge reuse s...
